Trang province and islands southern Thailand.
Since about 2000 years Trang is a busy trade
center. Between the 6 th. and 12 century the area had a important
seaport for trade between the Malay Peninsular and the Islands around
todays Indonesia.
From around the years 600 - 1400 southern Thailand was under the
influence of the Srivijaya empire centered in Jambi and Palembang on
Sumatra. Surat Thani was a major center in this empire and Trang
functioned as a transshipping point between Sumatra and the eastcoast of
southern Thailand.
Along the coast of Trang the light-yellow
sandy beach (about 20 - 30 m wide stretches for approximately 20 km.
This starts in the north with the Pak Meng beach - at the horizon some
bizarre rock formations - flora and fauna is explained later.
Farther south Chang beach joins the stretch, the Bae - Na hill nearby
has some ancient rock paintings to show. Pine trees line the sand,
actually one wishes for palms, but well one cannot have everything. You
can wade far into the water it’s only sand with few stones or corals,
always very flat.
A whole lot of Islands in Trang invites a Robinson play, one of the more
interesting and bigger is Ko Muk, (Ko or Koh for island).
A mysterious cave, that Morrakot cave or emerald cave, it’s worth a
trip. The cave receipt - approximately 10 m wide - partially is under
water and can be entered at low tide with a Kayak, of course one can
swim in also through the approximately 80 m long canal. At the end of
the canal the rock formation opens upward into a big hall and you can
see the sky. At the sandy beach of the hall, one can now wait for
midday, the sun now closes in, the water reflect a emerald gleam -
therefore the name -, in every case an fabulous optical impression.
In order to come to the cave, a boat service is offered from Kuan Tung
Ku Pier, the ship leaves every morning at 8 o’clock, price 40 Baht,
Longtailboat to do a private tour are available for approximately 400
Baht, is a great experience, indeed (where are there great experiences
still today?).

Flora and Fauna.
Libong island is interesting for birdwatcher, specifically during the
“colder” season (December - April) waders can be spotted, like Crab
Plover, Joo Hoy Cape and Toog Beach are a good watching site.
On the Islands you may see otters, water monitor, pacific reef-egret,
white-bellied sea eagle, monitor lizards, longtail macaques, dusky
langurs, wild boar, pangolin, little heron etc.
The sea grass beds are the spawning and feeding area for diverse species
like fish, prawns, turtle, and the dugong.
An appreciable canoe tour is offered to the Chao May Cave.
Check with www.tat.or.th . If you are already in the area go to the
tourist office beside the Trang hotel in Trang city and book a tour.
This makes sure to see the good stuff and keeps problems away not only
because of language problems.
The major Flora consists of evergreen forest, beach forest, limestone
forest mangrove forest.
The seaside is inhabited by fishing communities, many Moslems, who
migrated from the Malay peninsular in the last few hundred years. Their
villages are around the mouths of the rivers flowing into the Andaman
Sea.
Dozens of other islands with small resorts, bungalows or beach huts make
sure there is something for everyone in Trang province and islands
southern Thailand. |
