Electricity and gasoline - petrol in Southern Thailand is the main means
of energy. Liquid and natural Gas is slowly creeping into the market.
Wind and solar energy either solar cells or solar water heating is used
rather seldom.
One
pipeline is bringing in natural gas from the yadana field in southern
Myanmar (Burma) for electricity generation. But all southern Thailand
energy production is controlled by the state and that means no much
progress.
On the
very south end of Phuket a couple of wind generators are turning the
blades since years to bring energy to
southern Thailand
but
beside of this nothing happen.
Southern
Thailand has a lot potential in solar energy and in particular solar
water heating instead of using the electricity to heat up the water, but
there is no real encouragement from the government side. Marine battery
charger could also solve a lot of problems.
Songkhla is a fishing port since ancient
times and has recently become the center of the offshore gas business
and exploration in the gulf of Thailand, all the big US companies are
here, since they are the one who have the expertise, like
Unocal,
Halliburton etc. the hotels make good business with the
professionals who are shuttled everyday from the local heliport to the
offshore platforms. It looks like not much from the money created
through this business find the way into the local environment, but in
any case its some progress to produce energy in southern Thailand.
