To explain shopping southern Thailand

is really difficult, because on every street corner, street pavement etc. are virtually thousands of small shops who want to sell you anything you could think about, copying products is very popular. Of course there are also the usual big "consumer temple" called shopping mall.

There you will find all the same things for shopping like in the most malls anywhere. The difference is, in Thailand the prices are usually lower.

If you want to find something really native look for a OTOP shop, OTOP means "one tambon one product", tambon is county in Thai. The idea  was to have the people in one area concentrate on one particular product for shopping, e.g. exotic Christmas presents

I must bring in my own experience to make things clear.
When I go shopping and buy a Cartier copy watch in Bangkok or Southern Thailand I can be more or less sure it will work at least until the second change of the battery and no one know just by looking at it is a copy. When I go shopping and buy a original Cartier watch (I have 4 of them) the deadline is usually 1 year until a original Cartier watch brakes down (by mechanical failure). A copy Cartier watches works usually at least 3 years without problems. But Cartier is not the only company who obviously try to rip off  the customer, its the same with van cleef and arpels and harry winston, I have original watches from all this companies bought in Geneva, Switzerland and Singapore for many ten thousands of  dollars, all luxury junk (pure by empiric statistics) in terms of functionality they continuously brake down , but I know for sure the copy watches I sometimes buy at Patpong´s night market in Bangkok or elsewhere in Thailand are working fine, so many
exotic Christmas presents .

The same applies when you do shopping for such famous good as "the crocodile" shirts, I buy one of those at Patpong for about 5 EURO it’s as good as the original one from the French company. Since all the originals are manufactured in the far east anyway, just like the copied one the difference is only the money the company pump worldwide into advertising etc. why should a customer nurture the ad companies? This actually is a endless story and the advice can only be bargain and buy the good stuff in Thailand and forget the European stuff.

Since Southern Thailand has no social "swing", that means if someone cant get to work to get income, no one will help him, except maybe the family or clan. But due to the fact that a lot of people are moving to the big cities to try to make some money this family or clan structures are fading away because in a big city like Bangkok you are alone. This creates a unbelievable dynamic in southern Thailand and this dynamic let you get good stuff for rock bottom prices in shopping southern Thailand, for
exotic Christmas presents.
