What Is Rhinoplasty?
 by: Gray Rollins

Rhinoplasty, commonly called a nose job, is a type of cosmetic surgery designed to repair or reshape the nose. As one of the most prominent features on your face, your nose has a large bearing on your appearance and can impact how you feel about yourself. Individuals who are displeased with the size or shape of the nose can benefit from rhinoplasty because of the opportunity it offers to completely alter the appearance of the nose. Rhinoplasty has the ability to increase or reduce the size of the nose in its entirety, removing a bump, altering the shape of the bridge or the tip of your nose, narrowing the nostril openings, and modifying the angle between your nose and your lips.

Rhinoplasty cannot be successfully performed until the nose has stabilized and nasal bone has stopped growing. This typically occurs around age 14 to 15 in girls and age 15 to 16 in boys. Any surgery performed before this point runs the risk of having to be redone once nasal growth has ceased, since the nose has the potential to continue to change and develop until that point. Rhinoplasty is occasionally performed on younger children in the case of severe trauma to the face, so that the nose can be restored as close as

possible to its original shape and size. Most rhinoplasty procedures are performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.

There are exceptions to this rule, though. Patients undergoing severe reconstructive surgery may be monitored overnight to ensure that no complications arise. Individuals seeking to have their nose “set” after a bad break will occasionally receive local anesthetic only.

During the procedure the cosmetic surgeon makes an incision either inside the nostrils or through the columella, the external strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. The skin is then separated away from the framework of the nose itself so the doctor can access the underlying cartilage. In order to reshape the nose, the soft flexible cartilage and bone are manipulated into the proper position and shape. Depending on the desired results, tissue may be removed or added to change the angle or contour of the nose. A chisel or file may be used during the procedure, most frequently to remove a hump from the bridge of the nose. Once the nose has been sculpted into the desired shape, the skin is resituated and the nose is splinted to protect it. Nasal pads may be used for the first few days following the surgery to pack the nose and protect the delicate septum.

Rhinoplasty, as with all other surgeries, is not risk-free. In addition to the standard bruising and swelling, patients should be aware of a number of potential side-effects that could result from the procedure. These include an infection of the nose, nosebleeds, numbness, scarring, and a reaction to the anesthesia. Some patients report the bursting of small blood vessels on the surface of the skin and hematomas, or collections of blood that pool under the skin. The possibility also exists that a follow-up procedure will be necessary in order to remedy an over-correction or under-correction of the nose.

When successfully performed by a highly-qualified surgeon, rhinoplasty can dramatically improve the appearance of your nose and improve your self-confidence. If you are considering rhinoplasty and would like more information about this procedure, contact a reputable cosmetic surgeon in your area and arrange for a personal consultation.

The Facts About Rhinoplasty Nasal Surgery - Part I
 by: Wendy Butler

Rhinoplasty is a surgery to reshape the nose. This is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the United States. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of the nose, change the shape of the tip or bridge of the nose, narrow the span of the nostrils, change the angle between the nose and upper lip, or correct a birth defect or injury as well as relieve breathing problems. Rhinoplasty can change appearance and increase self-confidence but you will not necessarily end up with a "perfect" nose.

The best candidates for rhinoplasty are people looking for an improvement in their nose and not perfection. You also must be physically healthy, psychologically stable, and have realistic expectations of the future results of the surgery.

Are there any risks to rhinoplasty? Any surgery creates a possibility of complications, including infections, nosebleed, or reactions to anesthesia. Reduce your risks by carefully following your surgeon's instructions before and after surgery. After the surgery, small burst blood vessels may appear on your nose as small red spots that are minor but may be permanent. There is not usually any scarring if the rhinoplasty incision is inside the nose. When an "open" technique is used there is a small scar on base of nose but it is usually invisible.

Some tricks for planning your rhinoplasty are having a high level of communication with your surgeon and his office. Discuss the rhinoplasty techniques that are to be performed, what kind of anesthesia will be used, and the risks associated with the surgery. You need to communicate to your Doctor about any previous surgery's you might have had, especially nose surgeries. You also need to tell your Doctor about any allergies you have or breathing difficulties as well as any medications, vitamins, or recreational drugs you have taken. If you smoke, you need to tell your Doctor as he/she might have some advice for you concerning smoking. If you have any questions, let your Doctor know so that your nerves will not get irritated.

To prepare for your surgery your Doctor will give you guidelines on eating and drinking the day before, smoking, what medications you can and cannot take, and washing your face. Carefully follow the Doctor's instructions to ensure your rhinoplasty goes smoothly and you heal quickly. Be sure you arrange for someone to drive you home after your rhinoplasty and help you out for a couple of days afterwards at home.

In part two of this article you will learn what to expect during your rhinoplasty and afterwards.

Rhinoplasty Before And After - Surgery And Recovery - Part II
 by: Wendy Butler

Now that you have made the decision to undergo rhinoplasty and have prepared for your surgery, the next step is the rhinoplasty surgery itself and the after affects.

Rhinoplasty can be performed in the surgeon's office-based facility, an outpatient surgery center, or a hospital. Usually the surgery is performed on an outpatient basis but if it is a complicated rhinoplasty then you may be required to stay in the hospital.

You will either be under local or general anesthesia. Local anesthesia is when you are lightly sedated and your nose and the surrounding area is numb. You know what is going on but cannot feel what is happening to your nose. General anesthesia is when you sleep through the surgery and do not know what is happening.

Rhinoplasty surgery normally takes one to two hours unless it is a complex rhinoplasty. The rhinoplasty itself consists of the skin being separated from the bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage are sculpted into the desired shape and the skin is then draped over the new nose framework. Most surgeons make the rhinoplasty incision inside the nose in the nostrils, but some surgeons prefer the "open" procedure where the incision is made in the middle part of the nose nearest the upper lip. There is a scar left but the scar is hardly noticeable in that area of your nose.

When your rhinoplasty is complete, the surgeon will place a splint on your nose to help it maintain its shape. Sometimes nasal packs or splint may be place in the nostrils as well.

After the rhinoplasty your face may be puffy, you may be experiencing pain, or you may have a dull headache. Take the medication prescribed by your Doctor as needed. Stay in bed with your head elevated for the first day after your rhinoplasty. There will be some swelling and bruising around your eyes and this swelling will reach its highest peak at 2-3 days after surgery. Cold compresses will reduce the swelling and make your eyes and face feel better. In a few days you will feel much better than you look as most swelling and bruising takes at least two weeks to disappear. A little bleeding is common after a rhinoplasty and you may have a "stuffy" feeling nose for a few weeks. Any nasal packing or stitches will be removed after a few days.

You will be up and feeling somewhat better within two days after your rhinoplasty. You should be able to return to school or sedentary work after a week or so. The Doctor will give you specific guidelines as to what you can return to and when during your follow-up visits. Follow the Doctor's instructions and keep your follow-up visits to ensure that your surgery is successful!
