The first Phuket - Thailand- Kings Cup Regatta was held in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty the King of Thailand.   pls. click here first

Now the Phuket - Thailand- Kings Cup Regatta it’s Asia’s premier sailing and yachting race event and held every year in the first week of December to commemorate His Majesty’s birthday on December 5th.

This year - 2005 - 95 boats from all over Asia, Australia, Europe and other countries participated in the Phuket - Thailand- Kings Cup Regatta in several categories, sail boat racing and cruising, catamaran racing and cruising and other. The event was perfect organized, we watched the Phuket - Thailand- Kings Cup Regatta from the “Seraph” a gaff - rigged schooner of 20 m length chartered for the press for that event. The ship is almost 100 years old but looks like new, in perfect condition. We had two TV crews; a couple of photographer, writer and other on board, everyone had a great time in watching the maneuvering of the sailing yachts, catamarans and smaller boats.

Some of the crews did it really the hard way trying to block the wind for the other boat and there was also one accident when one sailing boat banged into the back of a other. The mast was slashed, the side ripped off and one of the boats quickly flooded, but help was there almost immediately, they somehow sealed the side and took the one boat on the hook. Nobody got hurt and no one really angry, its sport and something like this can happen in the heat of fight.
